James Carter's media career began working on a new launch called Soho News in the late 80's - a weekly fashion and lifestyle title aiming to take on Time Out and mimic NYC's Village Voice. It was short-lived but it paved the way to secure a sales role on the independently published FHM. James grew the title over the period leading up to 1994, when it was acquired by EMAP to compete with the newly launched Loaded Magazine. FHM went from strength to strength, overtaking Loaded and becoming the biggest selling monthly men's magazine the UK has seen - at one stage selling over 1m copies a month. In the early noughties James fronted the UK team across print and digital, leading the senior team global into 35 markets.

James moved on to work with Felix Dennis where he launched Monkey, a digital-only weekly proposition that took on the two men's weeklies called Zoo and Nuts.

Soon after, he raised some VC money to create the business of Factory Media. A buy and build project to establish Europe's biggest action sports publisher. Factory Media succeeded over a 6 year period, transitioning from print to digital and exiting to Forward Internet Group for a 4X multiple of the initial investment.

Most recently, James got involved with Digitalbox to create a media business from the remnants of the sale of an ad-tech business called Content Click. In the early days, the business focused wholly on establishing a profitable model within the mobile channel. It now publishes 11 brands in the entertainment space. From Entertainment Daily, TV Guide and The Tab to Reality Shrine, the business publishes over 4000 articles a month and delivers around 20m visits to its websites.
